September 2009

In July we launched a new program for the residents of Sweet Brook, Northern Berkshire Healthcare’s nursing home in Williamstown. At bi-weekly gatherings, groups of residents meet with two Inkberry facilitators, Paula Orlando and Ed Sedarbaum, to reminisce about their lives, their families, their friends, and the history they have all lived through. Their memories are then turned into printed stories, which are read aloud at the next meeting, often serving as a springboard for continuing discussion. In addition, individual residents meet privately with one of the facilitators to create stories that capture particular aspects of the lives they’ve lived.

Reminiscing has been shown to be a vital experience for the elderly, helping to keep their minds active and, most important, reminding them that they have lived valuable lives. One bonus is reflected in this comment by one of the participants: “I thought I didn’t know how to write — but look! I’ve written a story!” We hope in time to give the public a look at some of their stories.

Starting with this issue, Inkmail will feature excerpts of writing from regional authors with links to their websites, biographies and information about where you can purchase their books. If you are a writer who would like to see your work featured in Inkmail, please contact us by email at: info@Inkberry.org or phone at: (413) 664-0775.

This issue also includes our fall workshop offerings. Whether you are a reader or a writer, we hope you will participate in and enjoy the upcoming programs and events that we will be presenting in the coming year.
